How to stamp a nail
- Base color. Apply and cure (or fully dry) the base color. Stamping goes on a finished surface.
- Load the plate. Brush stamping polish over the engraved design and scrape it off flat with a card at a 45-degree angle, leaving polish only in the etching.
- Pick up. Roll a clear silicone stamper across the design with firm, even pressure. The image should be on the stamper in one piece.
- Transfer. Roll the stamper across the nail from one sidewall to the other. Do not press straight down; rolling keeps the image from doubling.
- Seal. Let the stamped polish set for a minute, then top coat and cure. On gel, use a no-wipe top so the brush does not drag the image.

Stamp plates vs stickers vs hand painting
A plate wins when the same design will be used many times: it is reusable, the result is identical on every nail, and it takes seconds once the tech has the rhythm. A sticker wins for a one-off design or a tech who does not stamp often, since it needs no polish or stamper and cannot smudge. Hand painting wins for custom requests and justifies the highest upcharge. Why does my stamp come out patchy?
Four causes, in the order to check them. The polish dried on the plate before pickup: work faster, and scrape and pick up in one motion. The stamper is too hard or too old: a soft, clear silicone head picks up far better than a firm one, and a head that has gone cloudy or nicked should be replaced. The plate has dried polish in the etching from the last nail: clean it with acetone and a lint-free wipe every time. The polish is too sheer: use a true stamping polish, or an opaque lacquer, and load the whole design generously before scraping. A plate that gives a crisp image on the first nail and a patchy one on the fifth almost always needs cleaning, not a new plate.
Combining stamping with other art
Stamped patterns take other art well because the stamped layer is flat. Stamp a lace or floral over a nude and set a single rhinestone at the center; stamp a French smile and run line art gel along its edge; stamp a geometric in black and rub an aurora chrome over the cured top for a two-tone shift; or stamp in white over a jelly and seal it under a second jelly coat so the pattern sits under glass. A plate in a drawer next to the rhinestone box and the chrome pot is used far more often than a plate stored alone.
Care and storage
- Clean plates with acetone after every use; dried polish in the etching is what makes a pattern transfer incomplete.
- Keep the protective film on unused plates and store them flat in a plate binder or their sleeves, so the etched surface is not scratched.
- Replace the stamper head when it stops picking up cleanly; the plate itself does not wear out.

Stamping over gel: the tacky-layer trick
A stamp holds best on a gel manicure when it lands on a surface with a little grip. After the color coat cures, the design is stamped onto the tacky layer rather than onto a wiped, glossy surface, then sealed with a thin no-wipe top and cured; on a wiped surface the stamping polish beads and smears under the top. A stamped design over a matte top gives the crispest edge for lettering and lace, since the matte surface holds the polish still while the top is floated over it. On dip and acrylic the set is topped with gel first and the stamp goes on the cured top, sealed with a second.

The polish is applied across the design, scraped in one pass with the card held at a low angle, and picked up with the stamper head immediately, before it starts to dry on the plate.
