How to soak off gel without damaging the nail
- Break the seal. File through the top coat with a 150 or 180-grit file until the surface is matte. Acetone cannot get through an intact top coat.
- Protect the skin. A little cuticle oil or barrier cream around the nail keeps the acetone from drying the skin.
- Saturate and wrap. Soak a lint-free wipe or remover pad in acetone-based remover, set it on the nail, and hold it in place with a soak-off cap clip or a foil wrap. Clips are faster to apply and reusable; foil is cheaper.
- Wait. About 10 minutes for most gel (Gelish states 10 minutes or less with its remover), 10 to 15 for dip and thicker coatings. Warming the solvent in the 2-layer manicure bowl, hot water in the outer container and remover in the inner bowl, speeds the soak.
