How to apply chrome powder
- Base color. Apply and cure the gel color. For a true mirror, use a black or dark base under a silver or classic chrome; for an aurora or pearl, use the color you want the shift to sit on. White under aurora gives the glazed-donut look.
- No-wipe top. Apply a thin coat of a no-wipe top coat (LAVIS Chrome Base or an LDS no-wipe top) and cure it fully. Chrome will not bond to a tacky layer.
- Rub the powder. Pick up a little powder on a silicone or sponge applicator and rub it firmly over the cured top until the surface turns to mirror. Repeat until the coverage is even; dust off the excess.
- Seal. Apply a second thin no-wipe top coat, cap the free edge, and cure. Use LAVIS Chrome Matte Top instead for a frosted chrome.

Classic vs aurora vs pearl: which chrome for which look?

Which chromes should a salon stock?

Why does chrome sometimes not turn to mirror?
Almost always the layer under it. If the no-wipe top was not fully cured, the powder sinks in and goes dull; if a tacky top was used, the powder clumps; if the top was applied thick and uneven, the mirror shows every ridge. Cure the no-wipe top for the full time, and on a fresh bottle test one nail first. The second cause is the applicator: a fingertip in a glove works, but a firm silicone tool or a dense sponge gives a sharper mirror than a soft brush, because the powder has to be pressed into the surface, not dusted over it. The third is the powder itself: an aurora over a dark base looks like a faint sheen, not a mirror, because aurora is transparent and needs a light or white base to show its shift.
Chrome on acrylic and dip
Chrome works over any enhancement as long as it sits on a cured no-wipe gel top. On an acrylic or dip set, file and buff the surface smooth, apply a thin no-wipe gel top, cure fully, then rub the chrome and seal with a second gel top. The gel layers give the powder the glass-smooth base it needs; chrome rubbed straight onto a dip top coat or an acrylic surface will not hold or shine.
Care and removal
- Chrome wears as long as the gel under it when it is sealed edge to edge; an unsealed corner is where a chrome nail starts to wear.
- Keep pots closed; chrome pigment is fine enough to drift and it clings to anything tacky.
- Remove with the manicure by soak-off; file the top coat first, since the sealed chrome layer slows acetone.
