Matching a lacquer to the gel a client already wears
Inside one line, a lacquer and its gel twin are pigmented together, so the match is close but not identical: gel cures to a harder, glossier film and reads a shade deeper, which shows most in pastels and sheers. Two coats of lacquer often need a third to sit level with two coats of gel. Across lines there is no match at all, so a shade promised on the hands should be finished with the same brand on the toes rather than with whatever bottle is nearest in colour.
The habit that settles this at the chair is a swatch stick per shade with gel on one end and lacquer on the other. It takes an afternoon to build, it answers the question before the client asks it, and it stops the tech repainting a pedicure because the toes looked lighter than the hands.
Turning a lacquer wall over
Lacquer has a shelf life in a salon that has nothing to do with the formula: shades go out of fashion faster than bottles empty. A practical rotation is to review the rack twice a year, pull anything that has not been used in six months into a discount or retail basket, and keep the freed space for the current drop.
