LAVIS released this season in two waves. The fall wave is amber: the Amber Crystal Cat Eye Collection (6 magnetic gels with gold pigment) and the Amber Jelly Collection (12 translucent shades). The turn into winter is velvet: Velvet Ember, 12 magnetic shades built for fall, and Velvet Glow, 12 shades made for Christmas and New Year.

Amber Crystal: 6 magnetic shades for fall
Amber Crystal runs AC-01 through AC-06: glowing gold and amber, a bright orange-red, a deep red, an olive green and a near-black brown. The pigment is gold-based, so the magnetic line stays bright with no gray cast, and each shade carries a fine crystal shimmer over the stripe.

How to set a cat eye stripe
- Base first. Apply base coat and cure. For the strongest stripe, add one coat of a dark gel color and cure before the cat eye.
- Apply the cat eye gel. One even coat. Do not cure yet.
- Hold the magnet. Bring a cat eye magnet close to the wet gel for a few seconds. A bar magnet gives a straight line; angle it for a diagonal, or hold it near the tip to pool the light.
- Cure immediately. The pigment drifts if you wait, so cure as soon as the line looks right.
- Top coat. Seal with a glossy top coat and cure.
Work one nail at a time, and keep the magnet away from nails you have already cured so you do not shift a stripe that is set.
How to build the jelly look
- Prep and base. Push back cuticles, buff off the shine, cleanse, then apply a thin base coat and cure.
- Coat one, a tint. A thin layer of Amber Jelly, cured. At one coat the natural nail shows through.
- Coat two, full depth. A second thin coat brings the shade to bottle color. Cure again.
- Finish. Matte top coat for the frosted jelly look, glossy for maximum shine. Cure and wipe.
Thin coats matter more with jelly than with opaque gel. For a darker read from a light shade, add a third thin coat rather than one heavy one.
Wear, care and removal
All four lines are standard soak-off gel. Wear runs two to three weeks on a prepped nail with a thin base coat and a sealed free edge. Daily cuticle oil keeps the finish from looking dry at the edges.
To remove, file the top coat off, wrap in acetone-soaked cotton for 10 to 15 minutes, then push the softened gel away with a wooden stick. Store bottles capped, upright and out of direct light.
