Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the 1.5 oz and 1 oz LAVIS jars?

Only the amount. Both hold the same LAVIS 2-in-1 Color Acrylic and Dip Powder under the same number. This page is the 1.5 oz jar of all 282 numbers plus the seven 36-color Parts in 1.5 oz, 289 listings; the 1 oz jars have their own page. Salons buy the everyday shades here and the seasonal range in 1 oz.

Which shades should I buy in 1.5 oz?

The numbers opened on almost every client: the French bed shade, the nudes, the pinks, and the top two or three reds. At an acrylic station these empty a 1 oz jar quickly, because a sculpted set takes a bead per nail plus the apex, so the larger jar halves the reorders and keeps a week of fills on one batch. The Modern Neutrals run is the usual first 1.5 oz order.

Can I dip from this jar as well as sculpt with it?

Yes. The powder is a 2-in-1: pick it up with EMA monomer on a size 10 to 20 brush for sculpted acrylic, or layer it with dip base and activator for a dip set on a short natural nail. The color is the same pigment in both; a filed and topped acrylic reads slightly deeper than a thin dip coat.

What are the Modern Neutrals and Fall Collection tags?

Two LAVIS runs that sit on the 1.5 oz page: 48 Modern Neutrals jars (229 Studio Clay, 230 Ancestral, 231 Basswood, 232 Nightingale Gray, 251 Celadon and the rest of the neutral block) and the 42-jar Fall Collection, which holds the newest numbers above 252 such as 278 Coral Pink and 281 Prettiest Pink. Use the sidebar tags to filter to either run.

Does the 1.5 oz powder match the LAVIS gel of the same number?

The formats are made to match under one number and match closely, but not perfectly: a filed and topped acrylic reads a shade deeper than the gel. Swatch the two side by side before promising a client one shade across her acrylic fingers and gel toes, or buy the LAVIS 3-in-1 (1.5 oz) to get powder, gel, and lacquer of a number in one listing.

LAVIS acrylic color powder, 1.5 oz: the working jar for the shades a salon runs daily

This page holds the 1.5 oz jar of every LAVIS Color Acrylic and Dip Powder number at ND Nails Supply: 282 single shades from 001 to 282 and the seven 36-color Parts (001 to 252) in the 1.5 oz size, 289 listings in all. The 1.5 oz jar is the size for the numbers a salon opens every day: the nudes, pinks, French whites, and the top reds that an acrylic station picks up bead after bead and a dip station opens ten times a shift. It is the same 2-in-1 LAVIS powder as the 1 oz jar, made in the USA, highly pigmented and non-yellowing, sculpting with monomer as acrylic and layering with base and activator as dip. The 1 oz jar of the same numbers has its own page, and the combined LAVIS acrylic color page shows both.

Two tags sit on this size only: the Modern Neutrals run of 48 jars and the Fall Collection of 42, which is where the newest numbers above 252 live. Both are shade families an acrylic salon reaches for often, so they suit the larger jar.

Why the everyday shades belong in 1.5 oz

  • Acrylic uses more powder than dip. A sculpted full set takes a bead per nail, plus the apex build; a 1 oz jar of a nude empties fast at a busy acrylic station, and the 1.5 oz jar halves the reorders.
  • Consistency across a set. One jar that lasts the whole week means every fill in that shade comes from the same batch, with no shade shift between the jar that ran out on Tuesday and the one opened on Wednesday.
  • The French and nude wall. A salon's French bed shade, its three nudes, and its two pinks are opened on almost every client; those six numbers are the first to buy in 1.5 oz.
  • Seasonal range stays in 1 oz. The pastels and neons that sell a few sets a month are better bought small on the 1 oz page; mixing the two sizes by demand is how most LAVIS walls are built.

Sculpting acrylic from the 1.5 oz jar

  1. Prep and prime. Push back, remove shine, dehydrate, then a primer suited to the client's nail. Prep is where lifting is decided.
  2. Liquid. EMA monomer in a dappen dish, a size 10 to 20 acrylic brush. Wipe the brush on the dish rim to set the liquid-to-powder ratio; a bead that runs is too wet, a bead that sets on the brush is too dry.
  3. Bead one, the apex. Place a medium bead at the stress point and press it into shape; this is the bead that gives the nail its strength.
  4. Bead two, the free edge. A second bead on the form or tip, drawn out to length and shaped before it sets.
  5. Bead three, the cuticle zone. A small, wetter bead laid thin and floated toward the cuticle without touching skin.
  6. File and finish. Once set, shape the sidewalls and free edge, refine the apex, buff, and finish with gel top for shine or sealer for matte.

Monomer sets faster in a warm room; work in a cooler spot or pick up smaller beads on a hot day. Cap the free edge with the last bead so the color wraps the tip, and keep every bead a hair off the skin, because acrylic that touches the sidewall skin is the first place a set lifts. The same jar also runs as dip, with base, activator, and top and no monomer, for the client who wants the color on a short natural nail.

Fills and rebalances from the same jar

The reason a fill shade belongs in the 1.5 oz jar is that a fill has to match the set it is joining. When the client returns at two or three weeks with growth at the cuticle, the tech files the old product flush, preps the new growth, and lays a bead of the same number into the gap; if the jar changed between visits, a batch difference can show as a faint line at the fill. Holding the everyday numbers in the larger jar means a client's whole cycle of set, fill, and rebalance comes from one jar. A rebalance, where the apex is filed down and rebuilt higher up the nail as it grows out, takes nearly as much powder as a new set, which is a second reason the nudes and French shades are bought large.

Dipping from the 1.5 oz jar

A dip station that runs one shade all day, usually a French pink or a nude, also belongs on this page. The jar is too big to dip into cleanly, so pour a working amount into a dip tray each morning and keep the jar closed; the tray powder is what the wet base brush touches, and it goes back into a labeled working jar rather than into the stock jar. At the rate a busy dip station goes through a French shade, the 1.5 oz jar is opened, used, and finished before moisture has a chance to reach it, which is the main reason the big jar suits the daily shades and the small jar suits the occasional ones.

How the LAVIS numbers are organized

The chart runs in blocks: 001 to 096 is the mixed core sold all year, 097 to 108 the glitters, 109 to 156 the spring pastels, 157 to 204 the summer neons, and 205 and up the warm and deep fall and winter tones, where the Modern Neutrals and the Fall Collection sit. The seven Parts box the chart in that order: Part 7 (217 to 252) is the fall and winter box, and the numbers above 252 are the newest drop, sold as singles.

Reading the Modern Neutrals run

230AncestralEarth neutral
231BasswoodPale wood
232Nightingale GraySoft gray
251CeladonGray green
163Fine WineWine, tagged into the neutral run

Neutrals are the powders an acrylic salon runs through fastest after the French shades, because they are the everyday full-set color for the client who does not want a bright, so the Modern Neutrals numbers are the ones to hold in 1.5 oz from the first order.

Matching to LAVIS gel and lacquer

Every number here has a gel bottle, a lacquer, and a duo under the same number on the LAVIS gel and lacquer pages, and the 3-in-1 page sells the three formats of a number together with this 1.5 oz jar. The formats match closely rather than perfectly: a filed and topped acrylic reads a shade deeper than the gel of the same number, so swatch the two side by side before promising a client one shade across her acrylic fingers and gel toes.

Storage and reorder

Keep the lid on and the jar dry and the powder keeps indefinitely. At an acrylic station the risk is monomer rather than water: a brush dipped into the jar wet with liquid seeds a clump that grows, so pour a working amount into a smaller jar or dappen for the day. Shelve by number, reorder singles by number, and buy the Part when a whole block of 36 is due for a refresh.
