Super Mario Games and Characters

Super Mario has been around for four decades! There are more than two hundred games in this Nintendo universe, plus four animated series and a film.  Correction: soon there will be two movies as another is planned for 2026!

The Games

There are two dozen main Super Mario video games, starting with Super Mario Bros. in 1985. It all began when wicked Bowser kidnapped Princess Toadstool and there went Mario bounding through the Mushroom Kingdom to rescue her.

Next came The Lost Levels, Super Mario Bros. 2, 3, Super Mario Land 1 and 2, Super Mario World 1 and 2, Super Mario 64 with 3D graphics, Super Mario Sunshine, New Super Mario Brothers, Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, and Super Mario 3D Land.

Things were going so well that Nintendo went back to the roots to introduce Mario to a new generation of gamers. They designed the New Super Mario Bros. 2 for the DS and included a hook that ensured it would be played again and again. The goal? Find all one million coins. (Wish they were real!)

When the Wii U came out, there was the New Super Mario Bros U to play on it. But Luigi finally got his moment with an expansion pack just for him.

Super Mario World 2 appeared in 2013 with brand new levels and still holds the record for one of the top Mario games ever. Back then, Super Mario Maker let anyone create custom levels and share them. A few years later, they updated it for Super Mario Maker 2 with cooler tools, new themes, and multiplayer possibilities.

Non-Nintendo gamers finally got a chance to play Super Mario in a speedrunning format with Super Mario Run. And when Nintendo released the Switch, they freed Mario to explore even further.  Super Mario Odyssey has open-world mechanics with new powers that make it one of the all-time favorites of the series.

Finally, if you don’t count Bowser’s Fury as a canon game, Super Mario Bros. Wonders appeared in 2023 with new puzzles and art to make it exciting to replay again and again.

The Characters

There are many characters, both playable and NPC, in the Super Mario games.

Mario: The iconic hero is a brave Italian plumber whose goal in life is rescuing Princess Toadstool (later called Princess Peach) from Bowser. His red cap, blue overalls, and mustache are instantly recognizable.

Luigi: Mario’s younger, taller brother in a green outfit with a more cautious personality. Though he’s often in Mario’s shadow, Luigi has starred in his own games like Luigi’s Mansion, where he’s a ghost hunter.

Princess Peach (originally Toadstool): The pink gowned royalty of the Mushroom Kingdom. Although she often needs rescuing, but is also capable and courageous in some games like Super Princess Peach and Super Smash Bros.

Bowser: He’s the main antagonist of the series, a powerful, fire-breathing Koopa (turtle-like creature) who rules his own kingdom. He’s known for repeatedly kidnapping Princess Peach.

Toad: Princess Peach’s loyal servant with a mushroom-shaped head.

Yoshi: This friendly dinosaur first appeared in Super Mario World helping Mario and Luigi. He’s got fun powers like a sticky tongue and the ability to launch eggs.

Wario: Mario’s greedy, mischievous rival with an exaggerated mustache.

Koopa Troopa: Bowser’s minions with red or green shells.

Goomba: Easy to stomp enemies of Mario.

Princess Daisy: The tomboy princess of Sarasaland who is a playable character in Mario Kart and Mario Party games.

Rosalina: A princess who appears in Super Mario Galaxy as the protector of the Lumas.

How many of the characters can you recognize in this Super Mario nail art?
